BREAKING NEWS: Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka was sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined Rs. 5,000 in the White Flag case in a judgement delivered in the High Court of Colombo today.

Gen Sarath Fonseka

The judgment was divided 2 to 1 with Deepali Wijesundara who presided over the High Court Trial-at-bar and judge M.S Razeen finding him guilty for the first of the three counts and Judge W.T. M. P.B. Warawewa finding him not guilty on all three counts.

The former Army Commander was accused on three counts including exciting disaffection in an interview given to a local newspaper, alleging that Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had ordered to shoot LTTE cadres surrendering with white flags during the final stages of the war.

The Sunday Times reported that Mr. Fonseka in a dock statement said that he was being sentenced as his political opponents wanted to engage in politics while holding him in jail.

The local media also reported chaotic scenes outside the Courts as Mr. Fonseka was being taken away with prison guards grabbing lawyers by their necks and pulling them away while at least two police vehicles were damaged.

Mr Fonseka’s wife Anoma was quoted as telling the media, “This government cannot compete with persons openly, but instead do underhand work”.

A larger group of former soldiers, some of them disabled, were present outside the Courts.

    • Hi~I was looking up blogs on SL this ionrmng. I found yours and wanted to say hi. I was in SL for a year, and you and I actually overlapped by a few weeks. Too bad we never met! I also noticed my friend Charles from the embassy in your pictures. It really is a small world in Colombo. You’re a Pickering fellow, correct? So am I, just starting out this year. I’d love to hear from you how things go for fellows with the overseas internship. I think my email will show up with my post, but if it doesn’t you can probably get it from Charles.PS I had the same realization after Sri Lanka I am under no obligation to love every country equally. Some places are easy to love and some are Sri Lanka. Hopefully you at least got some good time at the beach.
